CAROB HERITAGE
The carob tree enhancement project at Chiuse di Guadagna
Carob Heritage is a project by Le Chiuse di Guadagna , a farmhouse between Modica and Scicli in southeastern Sicily, created in collaboration with MuRu – Museo Rurale . This journey is dedicated to the rediscovery and appreciation of the carob tree, a symbolic plant of the Mediterranean and guardian of a thousand-year-old cultural heritage.
For decades, the carob tree has been a source of sustenance, culture, and connection for Sicilian rural communities. Carob Heritage was founded with the goal of preserving and renewing this cultural, agricultural, and landscape heritage, safeguarding its tangible and intangible legacy and transforming it into authentic experiences for visitors.
A project between culture, territory and sustainability
Through field research, listening to the local community, and experimenting in the agritourism laboratory, Carob Heritage promotes a new vision of the carob tree: not just as an agricultural product, but as a central element of a cultural system that intertwines Sicilian traditions, artisanal knowledge, and sustainable innovation.
Promoting the carob tree in Sicily requires rediscovering local traditions, agricultural practices, and knowledge passed down from generation to generation, as well as exploring new sustainable uses that can restore economic value and identity to the Modica and Val di Noto areas.
